SKIVE FAGFORENING X KRABBESHOLM
MODTAR PROJECTS

In the spring of 2011, Skive Fagforening created a workshop for Krabbesholm Højskole's design
students resulting in the exhibit "20 Chairs of Wood".

The students were asked to fabricate a utilitarian piece of furniture according to the rules laid
down by Skive Fagforening in only five days.

Inspiration was drawn from Enzo Maris's "Autoprogettazione” and Ken Isaac's "How to build your
own living structures" to design the workshop. In the 1970's they did away with the capitalistic
premise of disposable furniture by exhibiting and releasing publications demonstrating how
furniture could easily be built at home. The workshop is meant to be a modern interpretation of
their principles for the year 2011.

The goal of the workshop is to perform a quantitative analysis of the possibility to produce
furniture from prefabricated wood and materials that one may obtain from any common hardware
and lumber retailer.

The exhibition is meant to give a complete picture of the output from the workshop. One should
be inspired by the simplicity and transparency of design of the furniture, and be able to draw
upon the designs to create more furniture themselves.

The rules of the exercise required the students to use only standardized materials from the local
lumber retailer. The furniture was only to be composed of plywood, laths, wooden poles, MDF
and OSB. Paints and colouring was not permitted. Furthermore, construction and fabrication
should be possible with the simplest of tools; thus advanced production methods were not
permitted.

Via the workshop, the students had to explore the ideas that compose subjects like DIY culture,
local production, mass production, machined and handmade production, consumption and
sustainability.
