The metaphysics of the new
In famous libraries such as the British Library in London, stepstools are an important element of the inventory; if it was not for them visitors would not be able to reach up to the books on the uppermost shelves. In private households it too plays an important role, because many cupboards and shelves extend up high to the ceiling. Unlike in libraries, however, in private areas stepstools lead a rather shadowy existence: when not in use, they are usually stowed away somewhere in the cellar or a hidden corner in the living area. In order to put an end to this furniture hide-and-seek game, the design of Metaphys lucano reinterprets the classic stepstool as an integrated part of the living area. Aimed at presenting itself self-confidently to the beholder, it is intended to fit harmoniously into the interior. Following this goal, the stepstool surprises the user through a language of form that is overall clear and reduced to the essential. Slim and graceful, it blends neatly into the interior, exuding an appearance of elegance achieved through using only formally matched triangular elements for the legs and steps. To avoid an unnecessarily complex manufacturing process and keep production cost reasonable, the design of Metaphys lucano maintains the basic shape of conventional stepstools. Without adopting any specialised construction method, it nevertheless places particular emphasis on details: each element and component is elaborately designed so that the fastening screws remain invisible. Thus designed, this stepstool enriches the interior – and, in so doing, embodies an interesting metaphysics of the new.
