一、système vantaux Shelf System
honourable mention
red dot award: product design 2009
The horizontal elements of the système vantaux are multiple, the vertical elements per horizontal edge once congruent drilled. The connection of these elements is done by inserted pins. Hereby a vertical axis is created that allows twisting of the vertical elements. Hence these elements serve bracing the entire rack. This shelf is limitless in height and length, branches or gaps are also possible. The vertical elements can be installed in a ordered or disordered way that determines the appearance of the rack decisively. The production expenditure is low, almost any plate material can be used, that simply has to be cut and drilled accordingly, as connection parts simple steel pins suffice.
二、Tiziana Sofa
honourable mention
red dot award: product design 2009
Fine sewing art in form of artisan button tufting and invisible sewing underlines the extravagant style of the Tiziana sofa. The design concept focuses on individual style: up to five different colours and materials can be chosen.
三、Trias Coffee Table
honourable mention
red dot award: product design 2009
Reduced and concentrated on the basics this table nevertheless gives an opulent impression. The elegant curve of the metal frame imparts lightness. Furthermore, it can be combined with various lacquers and an inner surface of gold or silver conveying a sense of quality. Side tables are also part of the programme.
四、WK 469 scale Shelf System
honourable mention
red dot award: product design 2009
The visual appearance of the WK 469 scale is quite different to conventional shelving; it appears more interesting. The design avoids adjustable and end-to-end shelves – it does without shelves that might bend under heavy weight. The rack has solid mounted shelves that are fixed to each other left or right at the strong sides or at the rear panel. However, in contrast to conventional racks, they do not take the complete breadth of the rack, but instead overlap. This results in a surprisingly new and innovative overall appearance, and this shelf design automatically provides space for different book sizes. Again fixed to each other on the left or the right side, it provides space for standard-sized books, books in larger format, illustrated books and magazines. Storage space for large books no longer requires adjusting of shelves. An insert completes the functionality and allows for storage of CD and DVD covers.
五、Schrägrolle Castor / Möbelrolle
red dot: best of the best
red dot award: product design 2008
Evocative inclined castor
Long passed is the era of bulky wall-mounted furniture systems and squeaky cabinet units. Today’s furniture is an expression of a global lifestyle and, thus, sophisticated functionality plays a central role. Details such as castors are at the heart of a piece of furniture’s functionality and aesthetics and thus lend them more individuality – castors become independent characteristics that define both the form and the functionality of a piece of furniture. The Schrägrolle is a castor of almost abstract appearance, designed to be an expression of the intent to present an alternative to the generic, rather technical appearance of this product type by lending it a newly defined language of form. Created to look unobtrusive, simple and neutral, the castor was to be suitable to fit under any kind of furniture. The result of these considerations is an unusual construction: The bare wheel merges into the inclined and elegant casing to present a harmonious unit with an unusual perspective. The viewer looks at the turning wheel and is surprised that it is easy to move in spite of the inclination. The design of the Schrägrolle does by no means want to hide the essential element that makes it work; on the contrary, the wheel is boldly revealed to the onlooker. Due to its shape, the Schrägrolle, which is available in two different sizes and models, embodies an excitingly new definition for this type of product. It combines an independent form of its own with a functionality that is well thought out to the last detail – for an evocative aesthetics of ease.
六、SKiN Sofa

red dot award: product design 2008
Presence of the immaterial – form and expression
“Design … is an expression of the capability of the human mind to step beyond,” wrote the design theorist George Nelson in 1957, referring to the manifold possibilities that reside in human thinking, and which, ideally, find their way into products. Thus interpreted, design is a process of thinking whereby the onlooker creates the form of a product just as much as the person who created it. The French architect, Jean Nouvel, is constantly on the search for new forms to give expression to his designs, sounding the limits and possibilities of innovative materials and technologies in his work as an architect and designer. With the SKiN sofa, a design with a strongly avant-garde appearance, he now intends to give shape to something that is “essential” – a new kind of comfort is to be achieved through leaving things out. The sofa concept emerged while planning for the Musée du Quai Branly in Paris and the solutions, developed especially for the architecture of that museum, have now been transferred in an interdisciplinary approach to a piece of furniture. The SKiN sofa consists of a supporting structure in tubular pretensioned steel that holds another structure, the cover in double leather. A distinctive feature is that this upholstery is supported only by self-modelling geometric incisions. The SKiN sofa thus looks as if modelled from one piece, and the seat area in particular seems to be floating. SKiN is surprisingly comfortable and the leather feels soft and delicate. Its form is recreated through the senses and in the imagination of the beholder – a presence that is disclosed as a tactical experience of the immaterial.
